NO TENT IN BARRHAVEN RALLY

HIGHBURY AND GREENBANK ROAD

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH  4PM – 6PM

COMMUNITY GUEST SPEAKERS

With over 5000 voices united, we are sending a clear message to Mayor Sutcliffe, Councillor Hill, and Councillor Lo that Barrhaven opposes the establishment of a shelter for asylum seekers.

We cordially invite you to join us at the NO TENT IN BARRHAVEN RALLY, taking place at Highbury and Greenbank Road on Tuesday, November 5th from 4pm to 6pm. We encourage you to bring homemade signs expressing your opposition to tents in Barrhaven.

It is crucial that we demonstrate unity and solidarity in our stance against the proposed Sprung Shelter in Barrhaven without proper consultation. We must implore our Mayor and Council to exclude Barrhaven as a potential migrant center. Mayor Sutcliffe, Councillor Hill, and Councillor Lo have been extended invitations to attend. Let us come together and make our voices heard in a respectful and impactful manner.

Here's what you need to know

The city is considering 1025 Greenbank Road at the intersection of Highbury Park & Greenbank, as one of two potential sites for a shelter to house asylum seekers.

If no longer needed for that purpose, it could be converted into an overflow shelter for unhoused individuals.

A second site between Woodroffe Avenue and the Nepean Woods Park & Ride is also being assessed.

An independent engineering firm is currently evaluating both sites, with a report due to be shared with City Council by the end of October or early November.

✔️ Call or write to your local councillors to express your concerns.

✔️ Contact the Mayor to ensure community voices are heard. Stay informed, and make your voice count!!

Attention Barrhaven !

Welcome to our community! Our neighborhood is a vibrant and diverse place to call home. With residents who collectively speak nearly 140 different languages, send their children to one of our 29 schools, and come from various backgrounds, Barrhaven is a mosaic of cultures and experiences.

We pride ourselves on our strong sense of community, where neighbors are always willing to lend a helping hand. Residents actively support organizations such as the Barrhaven Food Cupboard, the Nepean, Rideau and Osgoode Community Resource Centre, and Cityview Children’s Centre, among others, that assist newcomers and low-income families in our area.

As a coalition of concerned citizens (see petition) we believe that a tent either on Highbury or Nepean Woods would be ill conceived by Ottawa City Council. We are justifiably concerned that our municipal government has not been transparent nor accountable to our community. There has been more consultation on a traffic stop sign than on relocating 150 migrants near 21 schools, 5 daycares and 7 seniors residences. Crime is going up, transportation and transit has become unreliable and our social services need to start catching up to our already explosive growth.

Residents have shown their support for our petition, urging our Mayor and Council to remove Barrhaven from consideration as a potential migrant center. We believe that a tent city is not a dignified response to the migrant crisis, and we demand transparency and accountability from our elected officials.

In light of the current challenges facing our community, including rising crime rates, unreliable transportation, and strained social services, it is crucial that our voices are heard. We will continue to advocate for the well-being of Barrhaven residents and insist on a more suitable solution to address the needs of migrants in a respectful and compassionate manner

Queensway Carleton Hospital looks to build urgent care centre on shortlisted sprung structure site

The issue: When two Barrhaven locations were shortlisted for a sprung structure to be built for housing asylum seekers coming to Canada, the community was quick to share its feelings….

You must have the same concerns or even more

⮚ Lack of Transparency with the Process: No full list of properties under consideration
and the scoring matrix has been released yet. Our voices have not been heard!
⮚ Capacity and Turnover Raising Safety and Resource Concerns: The proposed tent
facility is designed to accommodate 150 single adult asylum seekers at any given time,
indicating a regular inflow and outflow of individuals, raising serious concerns about the safety
and limited public resources in our community.
⮚ Long-term Viability: There is no adequate housing available in Ottawa for them after
their cases are processed. They need a home, not a tent.
⮚ Duration of Presence: The Sprung Shelter will remain in place for 25-40 years. This
Highbury Park location is in the heart of Barrhaven and must be used for the expedient
development of high-density, transit-oriented homes.
⮚ There Must Be a Better Solution for Asylum Seekers with a long-term strategy for their
life in Canada. A location closer to government offices, medical services, social services,
transportation, and occupational activities for them (specifically for single male asylum
seekers) is required.

⮚ We believe additional sites and other type of housing project than tent shelter
should be considered by all level of government. For example, many Federal
buildings available for housing projects are detailed in the Public lands mapping
tool: https://experience.arcgis.com.

⮚ Your city councillors encourage you to join the Public Virtual Information Session
on Thursday (November 7th at 7:00 pm), information on the project is constantly

Are you concerned about the city’s plan to construct a Sprung Shelter in Barrhaven? You are not alone. Lisa MacLeod, MPP, hosted a webinar on October 25th with hundreds of residents from Barrhaven to discuss the city’s proposed Sprung Shelter. The overwhelming sentiment from the webinar was a resounding “NO TENT!”

Bringing Transparency, Accountability and common sense back to city hall

Barrhaven West, and Ottawa as a whole for that matter, is in a critical stage of growth and development. We need to have leadership who will get the job done while representing the needs of ward 3 residents.
